Anatolij Olshanskij

- guitarist and composer was born in 1956 in Tscheljabinsk in the URAL. Already at the age of eight he was interested in music and started to play the piano. 4 years later he chose the guitar as his main instrument. After studying at the Moscow Musicschool, he continued his studies during his military service at the Moscow Conservatory from 1973-1979. Together with the military orchestra he performed in Austria in April 1977. As a soloist of Moscow Philharmonie he performed throughout the USSR and in 15 other countries from 1979-1989. In 1987 he developed a unique new instrument (GRAN), a synthesis of classical guitar and folk - rock guitar containing 6 normal nylon strings and set at an angle below 6 metal strings so that he can "switch over" from one sound to the other or even mix them while playing. In recent years he has also been travelling in western countries to promote this new instrument, which has been introduced to many musical people.

Four Movements (18 pages ca. 13 min)
»Edition Daminus has turned out some very good stuff in the past couple of years. Four Movements - a substantial offering from a Guitarist/composer who trained at the Moscow Conservatory - is no exception.Tonal in concept but liberatly imbued with chromatic dissonances, these imginative works are difficult to play (Grade 8 minimum) but remain safely within the practical range of the instrument.«

Vladimir (8 pages 5.16 min)
In 'Vladimir' Olshanskij presents us two ideas...a reflective 'frame', in b-minor, that opens and ends the piece, whilst in the middle section he is introducing a kind of 'campanella' feeling by the extensive use of glissando around the tone 'b'.

Humoresque Variations on Three Russian Folk Songs
(8 pages ca. 4 min)
This is a pretty effective offering from the Russian composer. We all seem to know this kind of e music... but it is enriched with 'wrong' notes and driven forward by it's strong rhythm.
A perfect 'encore'!

Fantasie (5 pages ca. 4.00 min)

"This is quite an effective attempt at a one-movement serious composition, of the more substantial variety. Not too abrasive harmonically speaking it is of moderately difficulty only and yet maneged to keep your attention for the entire proceedings. Anyone liking his or her music not too modern might .. like to give this successful piece a try.
